We’ve waited a bit too long to take care of some herd maintenance with our sheep.  The Barbados Black Belly sheep that we keep are an interesting breed.  They do not require shearing, as they shed their very straight fleece in the spring.  They are wild, but hardy.  They are nearly impossible to tame.  We’ve tried.  And yet their hardiness allows us to be pretty hands-off in their care.  To a degree.  They need fresh water and food daily, of course, and good fencing; but in return they keep about 2 ½ acres of our property “mowed” for us.  This is of particular importance during the summer for fire prevention.

Though they require little in the way of day to day care,  there are some health and herd maintenance issues that do require some work on our part.  Our main chore, within a few months of birth, is to neuter any male lambs that have been born.  However, catching one of the little buggers is no easy task!!!  After watching us chase, wrestle, dive, corral and lasso lambs one year, my mother-in-love suggested that we never do it again without having someone here videotaping us for submission to one of those funny home video TV shows!!  Once the little fella is caught, and the neutering job is done, a tetanus shot insures his health, and he’s allowed to return to his mother and the rest of the herd.

Proverbs 27:23 tells us: “Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, for riches do not last forever, and does a crown endure to all generations?”   We need to be careful to watch carefully over the resources that the Lord has provided for us.  Carefully tending to the “things” the Lord has given us, helps ensure lasting provision for our needs.  Even if you don’t have livestock, you do have resources given to you by God that require management.  Your households, for example.   Are you watching to know well the condition of your households, and are you giving enough attention to them?  The things of your homes will not last forever, but caring for them will lengthen their usefulness

More importantly, how about the condition of your family?  Do you know well the conditions of your children’s hearts?  Are you giving careful attention to their spiritual nurturing?  While moth and rust will destroy even the wonderful earthly treasures that the Lord has given us here, our family’s souls are eternal!  Don’t wait too long to take care of the needful things in your children’s lives.  Keep a vigilant watch over their hearts, pray without ceasing for them, and turn your heart fully towards them.

God bless you as you look well to the ways of your household!
