I had another light bulb moment yesterday.  Okay, truth be told, most of my “light bulb”  moments really are more along the lines of “duh” moments; but having a light bulb moment sounds better!

I’ve been battling seasonal allergies for a few weeks now.  Nothing horrible, but I have been taking OTC allergy medications daily.  Dusting my house has been causing my allergies to flare up, even on the meds.  A couple of times this has even triggered my asthma.

Yesterday it dawned on me to do my dusting while I vacuumed using the attachments to my vaccum cleaner.  Voila!!!  I had just a tad bit of a sniffle afterwards, but nothing much.  Another nice discovery was that the dusting brush on my vacuum does a very nice job of dusting figurines, the detail work on picture frames, and the wood carving on my antique furniture.  The dust was lifted out of all of those nooks and crannies and things looked so nice when I was done!  The cobwebs in the corners were no problem at all and simply got sucked into the vacuum rather than trying to stick to the walls as they would have had I brushed them down with my webbing brush.

It did take a bit longer to dust this way, but I think I did a more thorough job.  I’m sure I will still use my favorite ostrich feather dusters for quick jobs here and there; but I think I will try to do all of my weekly dusting with the vacuum from now on.  I am sure that the added minutes spent each week will reduce the frequency of performing other chores.  Things like washing figurines, detailing out picture frames and carvings on wood furniture will not need to be done nearly as often because the vacuum’s suction reaches little places that the feather duster cannot.  Washing down the panels on all of my interior doors will also need to be done less frequently if I dust them with the vacuum every week.  The feather duster just does not get into all of the little crevices.

We do live in an agricultural area (think lots of plowing, crop dusting, hay cutting, etc.) and I do leave my windows open for at least part of every day, so we get a lot of dust.  I’m glad to have found a way to deal with all of the dust without making myself miserable with allergy symptoms!  Do you use the attachments for your vacuum on a regular basis?

God bless you as you look well to the ways of your households!

  • That is such a great idea…a sure way to have less dust flying around the room! The only time I use my attachments are to clean along the floorboards and in corners. I don’t do this everytime though. 🙂

  •   Aren’t you glad we have a nice quiet vacuum?  That could grow old with a noisy one:coolman:  I hope your abergies get better

  • What a nice idea. 🙂

  • I had been having a terrible time with my allergies, and then I remembered that my mom had my sister take alfalfa for hers when we were kids.  I have been taking 4 alfalfa tablets after each meal and I am almost symptom free!  I still use an otc eye drop for itchy eyes.
