These soft breadsticks are so quick and easy, and they’re yummy, too. The recipe can be increased easily. I’ve tripled it successfully. There are some easy variations listed at the end for you, too. We had these tonight with our quiche. They are great with a main dish salad, soup, or pasta dish too.
This is a recipe that hangs next to my baking center all the time for an easy, quick fix anytime.
In a small bowl combine:
1 1/4 cups all purpose flour (whole wheat flour is great, too; or any combination of white and whole wheat flour)
2 teaspoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
Gradually stir in 2/3 cup milk and stir to make a very soft dough.
Turn dough onto floured surface and knead gently 3-4 times. Roll into a 10 x 5 x 1/2 inch rectangle (larger, of course, if you’ve increased the recipe), and cut into 12 strips (or more for a bigger batch).
Place 3 Tablespoons melted butter into a 9 x 13 baking pan. Place breadsticks in melted butter, turn to coat. Sprinkle with 2 teaspoons sesame seeds. Let rest for 10 minutes. Bake at 450° for 14 – 18 minutes or until golden brown.
*After turning breadsticks in butter, top with 1 teaspoon garlic powder and 1 teaspoon crushed, dried parsley flakes.
* After turning in butter, sprinkle with a bit of garlic powder (or minced garlic) and freshly grated Parmesan Cheese
*After turning breadsticks in butter, sprinkle liberally with cinnamon and sugar for a fun subsitute for toast at breakfast time.
