Sir Isaac Newton, P.E., Aeronautics and a Give Away!

Sir Isaac Newton, P.E., Aeronautics and a Give Away all in one day!  We’re just havin’ too much fun here!!!  The weather has turned cool, in fact it rained a bit, but we’ve been outdoors most of the day.  We’ve laughed ourselves silly.  We’ve whooped and hollered and cheered.  We’ve performed trampoline stunts….age appropriate trampoline stunts, which means that this 51 year old, arthritic mother of four and grandmother of four, did NOT do any flips

Dani really has a knack with photography.  She’s no pro, yet;  but she’s taught herself through a lot of trial and error and by observing what she likes in photos taken by pros.  She took the boys out this morning, under beautiful, cloud filled skies, to take some shots of them on the trampoline.  What fun!!!  She got some great shots, some of which I will print and frame.  (I’m not sayin’ for sure, but I’m guessing you might find some of the shots on the photo blog tomorrow).

Sir Isaac Newton 001

I watched as they jumped and laughed at their antics.  Of course, I should have stayed in the house because my children decided that *I* should jump on the trampoline, too!  I didn’t get as much “air” as the boys did, of course; but I jumped!!!  Little jumps, but they defied Sir Newton’s law just the same, and it was great exercise, to boot, thus the P.E.!  (I should mention that I also gave our across the road neighbor a chuckle as he drove off to work, too!)

Oh, but there were aeronautics, too.  Yep!  What a hoot!  We saw a fighter jet shooting through the sky, and heard the roar from his engines several seconds later.  We saw a HUGE transport plane do a quick, almost straight up take off (who knew they could do that?), and then perform some very sharped, banking turns.  There was a small fighter jet performing stunts with a prop plane, which impressed us very much.  There were four prop planes, shooting smoke, and performing precision maneuvers, which we thought seemed very much like watching the crop dusters over the vineyards all around us.  We saw another type of jet that can actually hover, HOVER, just feet off the ground!  Oh, it was fun!  You see, a large city, not too far from us, is hosting an air show this weekend.  I knew a couple of country roads that would lead us very near to the former U.S. Air Force base where the show is to be held, and today was a practice day.

Sir Isaac Newton 003

It was cool, and the breeze was almost cold.  It even sprinkled a little, but we put the hatch up on the van and huddled inside to watch.  From time to time, though, we’d get too excited or too involved with watching and would end up standing outside the van to watch.  Oh, it was fun.  But that’s not all.

Sir Isaac Newton 002

This air show is also hosting the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels and we were thrilled to be able to watch them in action.  Oh, what a blast!  My boys were smitten, of course, but Dani and I enjoyed every minute of it, too.  It was a wonderful show, and we were able to see all of it!  We’d had our little spot alongside the road all to ourselves for almost two hours of practice, but as the Blue Angels took to the sky, other drivers pulled over to watch, too.  We, my treasures and I, whooped and cheered and clapped, appreciating every little bit of the practice performance.

It has been a wonderful day!  We’ve really had a wonderful time!  I am, of course, mindful that my own dear husband, the one who enables me to be a keeper at home, which is the desire of my heart, and who enables us to educate our children at home, missed all of the fun because he was working.  His hard work, today and everyday, allow us to have days like this.  I am so thankful for the sacrifices he makes for us each and every day.

Let’s see…we talked about Sir Isaac Newton (well, at least we talked about defying gravity), and P.E.   I told you about our aeronautics outing.  That just leaves one thing to talk about……….

COPPER’S WIFE’S SPRING THANK YOU GIVE AWAY

The first day of spring is next Thursday,  March 20.  I don’t always remember the first day of each particular season; but my late mother’s birthday was March 20, so the spring date is always remembered.  With March 20, and the first day of spring, just around the corner, I thought this might be a nice time to host a spring thank you give away.

The “spring” part is self-explanatory, but here’s the thank you part.  Over the months, many of you have shown your support for this blog and my web site by using my links or my “Shop at Amazon” button to order items through Amazon.com.  A very small percentage of those orders is credited to my account, which I am then able to use to order books for my own Heritage Library.  I am grateful for your support.

Though I have no idea who all has ordered through these links (no names are ever reported to me), I am able to see the products that have been ordered.  Quite a few times I’ve actually discovered a wonderful new book to add to my wish list.  I’ve even discovered a couple of new household products and food items this way.  Thanks!

Sir Isaac Newton 004      Here’s the fun part!  I’ve used one of my recent month’s credits to purchase a couple of spring books that I now want to pass along to one of my readers as a way to say thank you.  I’ll include a few handmade items, too.

The first book is the revised and expanded edition of my all time favorite gardening book, Square Foot Gardening. This is the perfect method for gardens of any size.  We had great harvests from the three raised bed gardens we kept, using the square foot method, in the suburban backyard of our former home.  This is also the method I’m using for my new, small raised bed kitchen garden here at our present home.  Even if you only have a small patio, this book has some great ideas for you to use to successfully raise some of your own food!

The second book is a lovely copy of Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses, illustrated by Tasha Tudor.  This is the same edition that we have on our own Heritage Library shelves.  These lovely poems, many of which you’ll remember from your own childhood, are perfect for reading aloud to children of all ages.  They are perfect as first poems to memorize, too.  I freely admit that I love reading through this book myself.  Tasha Tudor’s beautiful  illustrations only add to its charm.

I will also be including two (maybe three) of my cotton, knitted dishcloths in spring-time colors, along with a couple of Dani’s beautiful, handcrafted paper birds.

If you’d love to have all of this for your own, simply leave a comment to this post before 10:00 p.m. PST on March 19, 2008.  You do not need to register with Xanga to comment, but you will need an e-mail address (Names left anonymously without an e-mail address will be excluded from the drawing, and my beautiful daughters are also excluded.)  Everyone else, however, is eligible!

It does not matter if you’ve ever ordered using my Amazon links or not, the drawing is open to everyone!

Early on the first morning of spring, March 20, I will draw the name of the winner. The winner will be announced later in the day on March 20.

Be sure to leave a comment to THIS VERY POST if you’d like to be included in the drawing.

God bless you as you look well to the ways of your household!

  • Cheryl,

I am glad that you enjoyed the air show! Living on an AF base for 20 years you lose some of that enthusiam!

    Kristina,  kristinajoy76@hotmail.com

P.S. Those trampolines sure are fun aren’t they 😉

  • I love seeing Air Shows, but haven’t seen one in so long I can’t remember when.  My daughter has always hated loud noises so Air Shows just haven’t been something we go to anymore.  I would love to be entered in your contest.  The Square Foot Gardening book looks especially interesting.

  • I’ll enter!  I kill everything I’ve ever planted, so a gardening “how to” book would be nice.  I’d love to actually have a garden sometime!  The garden of verses sounds lovely too, but you know I’m really in it for some of those handmade dishcloths!  I LOVE them, and spring colors sound DELIGHTFUL!  Count me in! Fun, fun, fun!

  • I’ve been enjoying your blog so much over the last couple of months…and now a contest too! Love that trampoline picture!

  • oh! how fun, I’d like to enter too! I have heard mention of the square foot gardening book. I think I will head on over to amazon, or check my local public library and find out what the buzz is all about! 🙂 I love your posts, and I could almost imagine watchin the Air Show!!

  • I agree with all the comments but the first one describes how I feel about your blog as well. You have been a great inspiration to me as I go throughout my duties. Please enter me in your contest. I would love a chance to win.

    Thanks

  • Yes, it’s very exciting to see them in the air. I remember seeing the stealth circle around my home, it was awesome. Sadly my kid who were very young at the time were taking their naps and my husband was working too. So glad to see your love ones enjoy it! Thanks for the memories. Delia

  • Thanks for the timely reminder that we enjoy our lives as homemakers because of the sacrifices our husbands make – I, for one, forget that altogether too often!  Please enter my name in the draw – I’d love to get my hands on that gardening book!

    God bless you!

  • GOOD MORNING!  :sunny:

Hey Cheryl!  Sounds like an exquistely fun day! Dani’s pictures are as beautiful as ever.  Looking forward to seeing more today!

Made those stroganoff meatballs again last night ( you would be proud, I also made a batch for the freezer! )  and I can’t get over how much my picky, picky, picky (did I say picky  😉  ) 6 year old loves them served over egg noodles!  Again, thank you for that.

That 1 square foot gardening book is awesome.  I took it out of the library last year and I just love the whole concept! What a great give away!  Count me in.

Have a blessed day in Him

  • What a neat idea. Hello from Nova Scotia Canada, where right now we are getting snow! How your post brought back so many memories. I used to be in air cadets and as a child my daddy took me to the local air show in the base in Sherwater Nova Scotia. When I was older (in air cadets) I would go with my group and watch the plans and meet crews from all over the world. I must admit that the Canadian Snow Birds are my favorite, but the Blue Angels are s close second.:) I wouls so very much like to learn the gardening that you have undertaken. It looks like it would work well for this area of the country and the book would be a great help if I win. The book of childrens verse is another memory. Three of my girls have been in a local childrens choir, one year one of their songs was a collection of these poems. What wonderful memories. I can hear their voices now. thanks

  • I would love to be entered into your spring givaway.  I look forward to reading your blog eveyday and have enjoyed  your wisdom and canter.  God bless you and your whole beautiful family!

    Elicia

  • LOVE the picture of you on the trampoline!

And I’d love to be entered in the draw too.

  • How exciting! Count me in too please!

  • You look like you were having so much fun on the trampoline! 🙂 Woohoo go Cheryl! 😆 :goodjob: My kids love it when I play too. Our favorite thing right now is to have races across the back yard.

Air shows are so neat! I’m glad you guys got an early preview show, and didn’t have to deal with the crowds and such. Great picture of the Blue Angels.

You are so sweet to turn your Amazon earnings around and spend them on your readers. You are such a giving person. Hugs.

I can’t wait to get into the dirt and start gardening. We will be moving this summer, so I will have to do container gardening this year, but I can plant flowers (curb appeal) to beautify my house until its sold.

    Have a wonderful weekend

  • Yes please enter me!  :fun:  I can’t wait to start our SFG beds.  I’ve asked my DH if we could do 4 4’x4′ instead of 3.  He looked at me quite puzzled and I said, “I’d REALLY like to let some strawberries grow there….you know the kind that grow HUGE.”  :giggle:  The other 3 will be for the children to grow whatever they want in them.  🙂  I can’t wait to get them started.  Of course, we still have snow on the ground where I want to put them.  That makes things just a little bit difficult to do.  😉

    Have a wonderful day!

  • Oh please do enter me if you’re willing to enter international visitors. I find your blog enormously motivating; your words have the power to lift me up of my seat, away from the computer and over to the kitchen sink or wherever else I ought to be!

  • We have done the very same thing… pulled over to the side of a country road to watch an airshow. And we have a prop/Red Baron plane who practices over our area every week in the summer. If I’m outside, I look up and wave at him.

I’m watching your early gardening with interest. With the rising grocery prices, I’ll be plugging veggies into open areas in my flower beds, in addition to my big veggie beds by the patio.

I’d love to be a part of the drawing.

  • The Child’s Garden of Verses was the very first book I remember my parents giving me as a 5 year old child.
46 years on I still love that book.
I know it was a huge outlay for them to buy such a large hardbacked book back then.
I now try and pass on to my children that love of books and culture.

  • I love the jumping picture of you! It looks like you had a lot of fun! I would like to enter the contest too please.

  • Hello Cheryl!

I haven’t posted a comment in some time. You know how life can get away from us and leave us without much time for “extras”. 🙂 But I’m excited to see about this giveaway. Especially considering Square Foot Gardening is on my “waiting to be funded” booklist. Here in Kansas we are just in the planning stages of gardening, but I think this would be a terrific addition to our home library.

    Thanks for sponsoring this!!

  • Cheryl, It’s nice to know you have a sense of humor! My kids use to laugh at me for jumping on the trampoline with a jean skirt on! I never mastered the art of gracefulness but I tried. You seem to be a great mom, and I get alot of encouragement from your blog, don’t stop writing!! By the way, the square foot gardening method is great, I don’t have the book, but my husband built us 3 boxes and last year the garden was great. Thanks, Paula (amishwoman49@ hotmail.com)

  • I get so much inspiration from your blog, it seems criminal to try to gain more!  I esp. benefit from your weekly menus.  I only plan 4 dinner meals ahead of time then fill in the other evenings with leftovers remade, ie. leftover stew becomes pot pie.

  • I don’t usually join in on the giveaways, but I’d love the Child’s Garden of Verses for my little girls.

  • Hi Cheryl,
Please enter me in your wonderful giveaway. What a blessing this will be to the winner!
    Thanks so much!

  • Okay, ladies, it’s 10:00 here.  No comments, after this one, will be considered for the give away.  The winner will be announced sometime tomorrow.

  • I would love to be entered, if you are accepting international entries.  I’m in Canada.

  •  I just wish I could give you a big hug(((())))! Thank you for all of your wisdom and encouragement. We love your Cherokee Chicken and the stuffed loaf. I would love to win the books but even if I do not  -I want to say thank you- I pray all the time for Titus 2 women  to be in my life and the fact is there are not many out there for a 42 year old late bloomer-I know I am to be one myself- but that does not mean I still do not need them in my life too! Thank you for your wonderful example! :goodjob: Melody Joy
