The More Things Change

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  My last post, in early July, found us enjoying temperatures in the triple digits.  Today’s high was expected to be 104.  I know that it was 101 in my backyard in the early afternoon.  Yet, it is August, and the California state fair is open.  We’ve always referred to the late August heat as “State Fair Weather”.  I grew up less than 30 miles from my present home, and that house did not have air conditioning.  I am thankful for God’s provision of a home with an air conditioner that works very well and for the funds to pay for the electricity that powers it!

We’ve had a busy summer, but a delightful one.  Some projects have been completed, others begun and new projects planned.

We celebrated Copper’s 53rd birthday with a fun dinner out with all of our children and grandchildren.

We have so much fun out together!

My handsome youngest child.  Will has grown by leaps and bounds this summer.  He is almost as tall as Dani.

Everyone returned to our home for cake and homemade ice cream after dinner.  This little girl…………she charms her grandma’s heart!  She is my dear, youngest treasure, at least until March!

My husband and I also celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary.  We did what we rarely do and spent a few days away, just the two of us, on the northern Pacific coast.   We stayed at a lovely inn, about a half mile from the beach.  The inn has been made over to look like a quaint old western town, but the rooms were well appointed.

Our room had a sliding patio door onto a back deck, and this was our view from the room and the deck.  When the tide came in, or the one day that the surf was up, we could hear the waves crashing on the shore.

We had a few days of nothing but quiet, rest, reading and relaxation.  Our anniversary cards, from the inn staff, our children and each other were displayed on the mantle.  We enjoyed a cozy fire in the evenings.

Time in the Word, time to read from several books, time to knit and time to enjoy peaceful quiet with my husband.  Bliss!!

We did take a few hours one day to ride the Skunk Train, pulled by a vintage steam engine, up the river canyon into the redwoods.  It was a fun excursion, but………

………….. our time at the beach was certainly a highlight of our trip.

The truth of the matter is, that after five days and four nights away, I missed my treasures and I missed my home.  Though I longed for another day of sitting with my feet up doing nothing but reading or knitting, I was glad to come home.  Dani and the boys did a wonderful job of keeping up with all of the watering and irrigating and chores.  We were blessed to have had the opportunity to leave without worry.

I’ve spent this week beginning to pull us out of our rather loose summer schedule and routines, and working toward implementing the more structured days we enjoy in the fall and winter months.  Yes, I know that there is still almost a full month of summer left, but my family functions much better and my home runs more smoothly with our familiar rhythms.

As I washed up a few things today, I was struck by how much I love my home and the things here that I care for.  The milk glass vase held a lovely arrangement of flowers from our garden on the headboard of our bed when we returned from our trip.

The vase and the blue oil lamp both belonged to my mother-in-love.  The Aladdin lamp is new, but we keep it clean, filled and trimmed to give us plenty of light when we have power outages in the winter months.  I was washing up the lamps as I tended to the monthly chores in my living room.  They are all drying on a cotton dish towel that my late mother embroidered before I was born.  What a delight it is to care for and use things that have been passed down from generations before!

I’m sure that you’ve noticed that the blog has a new look.  I am indebted to my Dani-girl for not only designing, but implementing the new look.  She spent many long hours at the computer working on it, taking and editing pictures for the side bar, and trying to help me understand the new system.

I am working on updating all of the information in the side bar.  Please be patient as we continue to work out the kinks and learn our way around the new design and new system.

Our home is quickly getting back into the swing of things.  Homeschooling is taking place daily, with the boys working through their full complement of subjects.  Aaron is transitioning from his freshman to his sophomore year as Will makes the jump from 3rd grade to 4th grade.  I am enjoying the extra time to begin tending my home the way I like, though there is still plenty of work out of doors to tend to as well.  Though it is work and though I am tired at day’s end, it is a delight to me!  I am looking forward to sharing those days of delight here with you again.

God bless you as you look well to the ways of your household!
