Fruitful

     From my commonplace book:

“To be happy at home is the ultimate result of all ambition, the end to which every enterprise and labour tends….”

Samuel Johnson, The Rambler
November 10, 1750,
excerpted from Living a Beautiful Life

Isn’t that a lovely quote?  I loved it when I read it, and immediately added it to my commonplace book.  The result of all ambition, the end to which every enterprise tends, is to be happy at home.  I do so love being home!  Adding little touches here and there, making the everyday things special, spending time laughing with my kids, and working at my husband’s side in the garden are all things that bring me joy.  I had a fruitful day that included all of this, and even more!

The cherries from our tree are in a cut crystal bowl on the kitchen counter.  Everyone is free to pick up a small handful as they pass by.  The cut crystal bowl for every day use, making the ordinary special for my family.

Late this morning, Copper and I picked berries.  My husband sharing with me, as our arms and hands were getting scratched from the thorny vines, that when we pick berries in heaven there will be no thorns.  What bliss that will be!  We picked eleven baskets of berries and half a basket of blueberries.

Right after lunch, Dani and I got busy on those berries.  Dani quickly rolled out and baked a very large pie crust for me.  I sorted washed and drained four baskets of berries.  I stirred a store bought container of strawberry pie glaze into the berries, and then poured them into the baked crust.  The pie went into the fridge to set.  This evening I whipped some cream, sweetened it lightly, and spread it over the pie.  For those of you that are counting, this is our second fresh berry pie of the season!

Once that berry pie was in the fridge, Dani and I worked together and made eight jars of berry jam.  The jars were filled and cooling on the counter by 3:00, which was incredibly good timing.  My husband treated us to a movie in town today.  We saw the new Pixar movie, Up.

I know you’ll ask what I thought, so I’ll tell you.  I liked it, but Up deals with some pretty heavy stuff – the heartache of infertility and the death of a spouse (both handled beautifully), an elderly man striking another man with his cane, and his being judged a danger to society.  The sequence dealing with the aging of the couple, done with a simple music background, was lovely.  It has plenty of smiles and laughs, as well; and my family really did enjoy it.  We will, more than likely, add this to our home movie collection when it is released on DVD several months from now.  As always with Pixar, there was a fun short before the main feature.

It was a fruit-filled and fruitful day, spent in the company of those I love best.

God bless you as you look well to the ways of your household!

  • Oh…makes me wish I didn’t have to go and BUY my berries.  Those pies look yummy!  Can I come for a slice?  I love fresh cherries.  Enjoy!

  • What a beautiful day with your family!  I love how you put the cherries into a crystal bowl.  “Saving things for company” was always what we used to do in my family growing up, until one day my mom realized that there is no reason the immediate family couldn’t enjoy the beautiful things everyday.  Glad you enjoyed the movie.  Have a blessed day.

  • What a wonderful quote. I plan to “borrow” it for my frig!

The berries all look so yummy. Your guard cat thinks so too!!

It sounds like a blessed day at Copper’s house!

  • I agree with you concerning “UP”.  My husband said it’s definitely going in the DVD library when it comes out.  I have never cried in the first 10 minutes of an animated movie before!  But I did at this one!

Your berries look wonderful.  Ours are flowering now.  The fresh berry pie recipe sounds perfect.  I’ll have to remember that when ours come in.  Have a blessed day!

  • More berry pie. I’m salivating. I should make one too…note to self: go steal Cheryl’s berries or at the very least, buy some at the market. ;o)
